Lighting the World

Bill Tramposch, Executive Director of the NHA, gives us an in-depth look at how Nantucket became the world's supplier of whale oil.

Dear Sir;
I am not sure if you can hep me find a little information on a ship I believe sailed out of Nantucket in or around the 1860's. My next door neighbor here, asked me if I could help her find any information on this ship because her husband has what I believe is a whales tooth with the inscription 1860 The Dakota along with a three master scooner on the front of the tooth and a banner inscribed Nantucket on the reverse side.

I have looked in some of the books that I still have but was unable to find the Dakota listed.
My Great Grandfather was a Capt. on the Schooner the Marion in the 1860's, a lumber hauler, which sailed along Alaska and S. America shores. I have kind of lost touch with my family history, but I think its time I get back into it again.
I tank you for any information you might be able to find and for your time.

Sincerely
