9-15-07- In a muddy battle, the Nantucket Whalers Football team dropped their first game of the season 14-6 to the Southeast Regional Voc/Tech High School Hawks.
Southeastern’s inside rushing attack helped the Hawks get on board in the first quarter with a 10 yard run by AJ Goucher.
The Whalers countered with a powerful 50-yard kick-off return by Delroy Lawrence to Southeastern’s 30-yard line. Whalers quarterback Chris Welch connected for 4 passes on the following drive, including a pass to Lawrence on a 4th and short yardage situation. The drive culminated in a beautiful 13 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Ferreira who gracefully kept his feet inbounds in the back of the end-zone.
Solid defense and good special teams play led to exceptional field position in the first half and kept the Whalers close, trailing 8-6 at the break.
Southeastern’s persistent middle rushing attack led to a four-yard touchdown run by Eric Drayton in the third quarter. The Whalers relied heavily on their passing attack in their comeback attempt, but costly turnovers and penalties prevented the Whalers attempts. Welch ended up with three interceptions in the game and a 60-yard punt return by Ferreira in the third quarter was called back for holding.
The Whalers young team certainly has a lot to build off of, they hung close throughout the game, contained Southeastern’s rushing attack, and showed a very effective passing game. However, the team took a big hit in the fourth quarter with an injury to star Delroy Lawrence who could miss the next few games.
