The Nantucket Boys & Girls Club hosted their annual musical extravaganza, Summer Groove, on Saturday, Augsust 18th. It was hard to miss that large tent that stood in the club’s football field off of Sparks Avenue, and even harder to miss the tunes belted out by rock and roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis (for the younger generations, Lewis sang “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”) .The proceeds of the exciting and jam-packed event benefit The Boys & Girls Club. With 600 people in attendance, this year was yet again, a wild success for the fifth year in a row. “It‘s our biggest fundraiser for the club, we‘re just thrilled to have it,” said Jane Stoddard, Development Director for The Boys & Girls Club, “It‘s a lot of planning and we‘re really lucky: we have a large committee that‘s board members and community members that do so much.” The Nantucket Boys & Girls Club is an invaluable asset on Nantucket. It provides something to do, someplace safe and healthy and recreational to go to for the children of the islands' working families for a very reasonable cost ($25 per year). The club, if you’ve never had the pleasure of going inside, has a rec room, a computer lab, a gymnasium, and football and soccer fields, just to name a bit, all for the kids’ usage year-round. “Now that the births are going up on Nantucket, we’re going to see an influx [of kids] as the years progress,” said Phyllis McInerny, Executive Director of The Boys & Girls Club, “[If there was no club] they’d have really limited activity. We have the kids immediately over after school.” For more information on how you can help with The Nantucket Boys & Girls Club, check out their Web site at http://www.nantucketboysandgirlsclub.org.
