Nantucket

Cruisin' for Seals on Muskeget

Seal Cruise: Muskeget Point

Hundreds of Seagulls and Seals rest on the shores of Muskeget.

As winter sets in and the Island starts to clear out, animals on Nantucket like Ducks in Madaket or Gray Seals on Muskeget are as active as ever.

The MMA and Shearwater Cruises are offering trips through the holidays to Muskeget, an Island off the western coast of Nantucket. Captain Blair Perkins guides the boat while Natural Science Director at the Maria Assocication Bob Kennedy narrates the expedition.

Nantucket is home to about 3000 of the Gray Seals, a species of Seal that started showing up on Nantucket 30 years ago and are normally twice as big as the common harbor seal that can be seen up and down the Jetties.

This particular time of year the Gray Seals gather on Muskeget Island to give birth to their pups (there are over 100 babies just days and hours old) .

Thanks to the Maria Mitchell Association and Shearwater Cruises for offering these incredible tours.
