Despite a little bit of fog, dedicated and generous golfers got onto the Sankaty Head Golf Course to raise money for Nantucket's Boys & Girls Club. The Sam Sylvia Pro-Am Golf Tournament has been a wildly successful event on the Island for the last 14 years, last year having raised approximately $90,000 for the Boys & Girls Club, according to developmental director of the club Jane Stoddard."The event was inspired by Sam Sylvia," she said about the former Boys & Girls Club Board Member who passed away in 2003, "He thought it would be a fun way to raise money for the club. He was an avid golfer."Sam Sylvia's wife, Bobbi Sylvia, still participates as a golfer in the tournament.Prior to the morning of the tournament, there was a silent and live auction held to raise additional funds for the charity at a Cocktail Party.32 foursomes were signed up to tee off at 9 am for the tournament. Teams were composed of three amateur golfers and one professional. Each slot in the tournament cost $750.Various gifts were donated from local businesses for the overall prizes to be awarded."The pros are also playing with their own ball. The low professional will be awarded $5000," stated Nathan Robbins, Executive Director for the New England PGA.Stay tuned to Plum to find out the winners of the tournament, and be sure to watch Channel 22 for video coverage of this great charity event.
