The Prince Of Nantucket

Liz Huberman

The Prince Of Nantucket may not be Jan Goldstein, but with the popularity of his novels, he's not that far-off from royalty.

Goldstein has been a writer for years, with experience in writing for the stage and screen, but really found his niche when he began writing novels five years ago. It all began with his first novel, All That Matters, which went onto become a Los Angeles Times Bestselling Novel. The book is about a young woman who learns to love life with the help of her grandmother, taking place in Venice Beach and New York City.

The Prince of Nantucket is not far behind the hype that his first book generated, having been named on The New York Times' Summer Reads list. This novel is set in none-other than Nantucket Island, about a man who comes to terms with his own life as a father and as a son.

"People have just been wonderfully responsive on-Island to the book," Goldstein said, "It's been lovely."

Goldstein was on-site at Nantucket Bookworks to sign his newest release. His tour has been going on for about eight weeks, with time for him to go home in between for a few days here and there. "I've been really looking forward to Nantucket because [The Prince of Nantucket] is set here," said Goldstein, "I remember walking around one year ago and it was raining out and I was thinking that one year from now this book would be out here on the Island."

With experience in the world of writing for quite some time, Goldstein is an advocate of locally-owned businesses and bookstores. "There is something very special about the local bookstore to the town it is in," he said, "We've seen so many bookstores disappear because of the monoliths. It's just so important to the culture and the lifeblood of of the community."

So what should we expect next from Goldstein? "I'm writing two books right now," he devulges about his two-book deal with Random House, "The Bride Will Keep Her Name is about a bride who is forced to discover who she is really marry a week before her wedding, and the other one is a thriller."
