Plum takes on Coast Guard Station Brant Point to find out what it takes to be a part of their crew.
Nantucket's Coast Guard Station Brant Point is well-known in the island community for their amazing crew and heroic efforts on the water. So what happens when Plum producer Jenelle Ferri heads down to the station on Easton Street to become one of the crew for a day?
Plum went behind the scenes in our very first Plum Takes On, where we bring you the scoop on what it takes to be a part of Nantucket's finest.
US Coast Guard Station at Brant Point became headquarters for what was formerly the US Lifesaving Service; two buildings were added originally after 1939 (when the CG took over the brick structure that was built in 1856). Towards the mid-20th century, the Berthing Building was added, transported by barge from the Coskata Lifesaving Station on the island. The garage was brought to the CG Station Brant Point grounds from the Madaket Lifesaving Station circa 1965. Docks were added in 1970 and the old boathouse was donated to the town.
Coast Guard Station Brant Point is one of two stations on the island. Coast Guard Loran Station is located out in Siaconset (better known as 'Sconset to the locals).
The crew at CG Station Brant Point is responsible for Nantucket Sound Main Channel to Cape Poge and 50 nautical miles south and east of the island. Their three boats include a 41' UTB (Utility Boat), a 47' MLB (Motor Life Boat), and a 25' RB-S (Response Boat Small). The 47-foot MLB has a whopping total of 860 horsepower, and can hit a maximum speed of 25 knots. The smaller 25-foot boat can reach a max speed of 46 knots.
After former Coast Guard Senior Chief Sheila Lucey had her retirement ceremony in May 2007, Chief Terrill Malvesti took over CG Station Brant Point. The station currently has 24 in their crew, from Food Service specialists to Engineering and Deck Departments.
Check our our segment below to see what the average crewmember's day is like, and don't forget to watch it on This Week on Nantucket, Channel 22, beginning Friday, Feb 8 at 7p. It will re-air every day until Feb 15 at 8am, 3pm and 7pm.

great job guys-
very informative even for us olde salts
keep up the good work
just remember that these men and woman will do whatever it takes to get the job done- whatever the conditions.
we had a fishing boat out of New bedford go done 12 miles south of Fire Island inlet yesterday in 15-20ft seas and they had to drop a man in the water to save the 3 fisherman who had just abandoned ship in 40 degree water- had they not had their survival suits on they probably would not have lasted more than a few minutes-
this is what these young men and woman do when called upon- that is their job and nobody does it better.
Great job Jenelle! And I
Great job Jenelle! And I liked your hat too. Keep up the good work!
