Not A Goodbye for Mitchell's Book Corner

Mitchell's Book Corner: A Nantucket Staple

Mitchell's Book Corner sold to summer resident and philanthropist Wendy Schmidt.

Mitchell's Book Corner has been a icon at the top of Main Street in Nantucket's historic downtown district for more than four decades. This year, Mimi Beman said goodbye to the island mainstay upon shaking hands with new business proprietor Wendy Schmidt, a seasonal resident of Nantucket and president of the Schmidt Family Foundation.

Beman, who ran the business after the loss of her parents, is a descendant of historic notable Maria Mitchell, and has nothing but positive memories from her time with Mitchell's. Beman said that she's been in the business for 40 years, and now it's time to go, adding that she's excited about spending more time with her new granddaughter. The business will now be run by employees Mary Jennings and Lucrectia Voigt, and the building will be fixed up, a task that Beman called "awesome."

Beman sat down with Plum host Kate Brosnan to talk about her love of the island and being a part of the business for so long. Take a look below at our video with Beman giving Kate some book advice, as well as talking about what her hopes for the future are.
