Being surrounded by water poses a natural set of obstacles for people living on Nantucket. However, as the Executive Director of the NHA Bill Tramposch points out in our story on How Nantucket Helped Light the World, sometimes water can connect rather than divide. The Nantucket High School Sailing Team knows exactly what he means, sailing in competitions from Maine to Bermuda and making friends along the way.
The Nantucket Community Sailing organization was established in 1995 and has been connecting the youth of Nantucket with the water that surrounds them ever since. NCS provides critical support in the form of resources and funding for the NHS Varsity sailing program. The Nantucket High School was one of the first public schools on the Cape & Islands to offer a Varsity Sailing program.
NCS
Executive Director and Varsity Sailing Coach Nic Judson started coaching the Varsity team in the Spring of 1998 and has played a crucial role in developing the program.
Judson said, “I think seeing kids in this program who have learned to sail and taken that and shared it with others; that to me, is probably the most special thing to see. I get to be hands on, work with these kids and see them improve.”
As students of the NHS Sailing team zip around the harbor in 30mph winds and 40 degree weather, you realize that sailing is most certainly a sport.
Judson added, “Sailing instills a lot of confidence in the kids. It's always about decisions, whether or not to go on the water, left or right side, it's all about decisions that you make and it transfers really nicely into life. It really does give you a perspective on life.”
