The Whalers Football Team celebrated their homecoming victory with Hurricane Noel on the horizon.
Nantucket's had quite a year, and looking back on everything that has happened on the island, we couldn't think of anywhere else we'd rather be. Whether you were getting crazy with the yachtsmen on Figawi, or tasting the finer things in life at the 2007 Nantucket Wine Fest, or just enjoying a riveting Whalers Football game, we've got the year wrapped up in a nice package, just for you. Let's take a look back on some of the highlights from 2007.
On the Water
Let's face it, you can't get away from the water when you're 30 miles out to sea on an island. Nantucket is the ideal destination for sailors at the helm of boats all shapes and sizes. From Figawi weekend, to the die-hard champions of Nantucket Race Week, to the crazy antics at the Build Your Own Boat charity boat race and Scallop Cup, sea-faring fantasies are put at ease on Nantucket.
The Science of Nantucket
Thanks to the efforts of some hardworking people and groups, Nantucket's natural Bay Scallop fishery is back in business after a couple of tough seasons. In addition to closing Second Bend to help out the depleting scallop population, Nantucket has taken some important steps forward with the help of many people, including Town Biologist Jeff Mercer, MMA Director of Natural Sciences Dr. Bob Kennedy, and local scalloper and SCUBA instructor Phil Osley.
If you've had enough of life on the open water, there's always the skies above. The Maria Mitchell Association introduced their brand-spanking new 24" telescope in April of 2007.
The Cranberry Harvest Festival gave locals and visitors a chance to sample some earthy delights care of Nantucket's cranberry bogs, plus a chance to take a bit of the natural treasure home with them. Plus, we got a chance to chat with Plum 98'er Tom Larabbee, Sr., about what life's like on the bogs.
This Old Island
Bill Tramposch, Executive Director of the Nantucket Historical Association described Nantucket’s unique role in the history of Whale Oil on Nantucket. This Old Island certainly has a rich history that included some Gutsy Gals and the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe from Martha's Vineyard. History was made when Sankaty Lighthouse was transported 280 feet away from the eroding cliff's bluff in 'Sconset. Speaking of historical structures, we can't forget about the Historic House Tour from this past year, where we got an inside look at some beautiful and historically significant homes around Nantucket .
Nantucket's 'Can't Miss' Events
On Nantucket, there are events that come but once a year, and perhaps, for some people, once in a lifetime. The Nantucket Film Festival displayed some remarkable talents, such as Joe Pantoliano and Steven Weber. If you're in the mood for some fine wine, you can't miss all of the aficionados at Nantucket Wine Fest. Circus Flora provided thrills for the whole family under the Big Top with Dondi the Elephant out in Tom Nevers Field, and the annual Carnival was a gas for both visitors and locals alike. The Boston Pops put on a show for 8,000 guests down at Jetties Beach, and soon after, the annual Boys & Girls Club charity Summer Groove concert followed with hundreds of guest in attendance to hang with Jerry Lee Lewis.
Only On Nantucket
The island is famous for many things, from the pristine beaches, to the breathtaking nature. But some things are irreplacable and unmatched, such Nantucket Reds and Portuguese Bread. The Accidentals & Naturals are another gem of the island, thanks to the help of Nantucket High School teacher Barbara Elder. With all of the unique elements of Nantucket, who wouldn't want to be here?
From all of us here at Plum, have a happy, healthy, and wonderful 2008!
