The Annual Daffodil Festival Weekend will take place April 25-27 and is a celebration of spring on Nantucket. The end of the long, grey winters on the island comes when the daffodils begin to poke their heads out of the soil and the days start feeling a little longer, all a welcomed sign of the warmer months to come.
The festivities start with an Antique Car Parade on Saturday at 11am and will be followed by picnics in ‘Sconset. The tradition has been going on every year since 1978 as a means of welcoming Spring on Nantucket.
Stores around the island begin to open up their doors to the public again, and seasonal residents re-enter their homes for a spring-cleaning. The sunny daffodils offer a nice touch to the island, beautifying and brightening roadsides, flowerboxes, homes and gardens. With over 100 antique cars decked out in colorful attire during last year’s parade, this year’s festivities are sure a success yet again.
A new addition to the 2008 Daffodil Festival is the 1st Annual Daffodil Dog Parade, taking place on the corner of Main & Federal Streets at 12:30pm, following the Antique Car Parade.
