It’s hard to determine what the sky was illuminating on Friday night, the impending Hurricane Noel or the release from a sensational game-winning drive and last second heroics. With three seconds remaining, the Nantucket Whalers Football team capped-off a 70-yard drive with a touchdown pass to beat Tri-County 13-12.
It's moments like these that make us wonder if Nantucket is spookily magical, if the cranberry harvest might have gotten out of control, and even question Christopher Hitchens' arguments. Anyway you look at it, the Whalers played a tremendous game in their final home game of the season.
On the first drive of the game, Whalers Quarterback Chris Welch connected with Jordan Ferreira on a touchdown pass, giving the Whalers a 7-0 lead.
However, Tri-County controlled most of the second half. The cougars showed an effective running attack and capitalized on a Whaler fumble for a 12-7 lead in the fourth quarter.
The game appeared to be over after Tri-County intercepted a pass from Welch with five and a half minutes remaining. The Whalers bunkered down and were able to stop the Cougars on three straight plays to force a punt. This set the stage for the Whalers' 70 yard drive with two minutes remaining, highlighted by a 30-yard pass and a touchdown pass to Ferreira.
Take a look at the video below for highlights of the Whalers vs. Tri-County Regional VoTech game.
