Nantucket Fishing Report: 8/1/08

Mako sharks like this one caught aboard the Albacore this week are a lot of fun to catch and great eating.

It's august and there are tons of bluefish all around the island according to Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters. The best place from the beach is Great Point and the north side of the island. The striper fishing is a little slow right now. The water is too hot for the fish to feed during the day. Your best bet is early in the morning and late in the day. The first Bonito of the year were caught off Madaket this week. These little tuna are a lot of fun on light tackle and fly rods.

Bottom fishing continues to be good. Several fluke in the 7 to 8 lb. range were caught this week. Offshore the tuna fishing is a little slow. It’s been hard to find the fish with all the fog to the east of the island. The shark fishing is red hot. Lots of blue sharks and small Makos up 175lbs. These small makos are great eating. They taste just like Swordfish. The canyon action has been good with Swordfish, Yellowfin tuna, and Marlin all being caught this week.

Check back every Friday for a new report. –Tee Clarkson
