Nantucket Fishing Report: 6/27/08

This nice bluefin was caught aboard the Albacore this week.

The bass and bluefishing continues to be fantastic all around the island according to Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters. There are lots of big striped bass off Sankaty Head. The biggest problem is getting through all the bluefish. We have not seen this many bluefish in over 20 years. Great Point has a nice mix of both bass and blues in the rip. Most of the bass are being caught on the east tide at the end of the rip. Plenty of scup and sea bass on the wrecks in the sound.

The offshore action is in full swing. South of the island there are plenty of sharks being caught, mostly Blue sharks with a few Makos and Threshers mixed in. There is a nice eddy of warm water in Altantis Canyon. Some friends of Bob’s caught two Yellowfin tuna, a White marlin, jumped off a Blue marlin and boated a swordfish there last week. East of the island the Bluefin tuna action is red hot! Most of the fish are in the 50 to 60 inch range but a few giants have been caught.

Check back every Friday for a new report.-Tee Clarkson
