Nantucket Fishing Report: 5/16/08

The recent NE wind is not doing anything to help what has been a slow start to the fishing season.

Captain Bob Decosta of Albacore Charters reports there are still plenty of mackerel in and around the sound, and that there should be some small bass in the harbor by now. Polpis Harbor would be a place to start or Miacomet with the NE wind. The first keeper bass could be caught any day.

Word is there are some big bluefish in Falmouth. They should make the trip across the sound as soon as the wind turns SW.

Captain Pete Kaizer of the Althea K says the recent winds out of the NE have cooled the water temperature to around 48 degrees which is part of what is contributing to the slow fishing. The poor squid numbers this year are also raising concerns. There are some stripers and bluefish in Vineyard Sound so the fishing should pick up soon. He hopes next week’s full moon tides will have the bait moving in with the fish following.
