Clean Team: A Problem That Keeps Piling Up

Littering on the Island is a problem that is piling up.

Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

And indeed, that is exactly what Nantucket Clean Team strives for: to make our island a more beautiful place.

This past spring marked the fourth season for the team. A location to pick up litter and debris is picked for every Saturday morning at 8 a.m. 105 giving individuals are signed up in total for the events, according to Bill Connell, one the leading figures of the cleanup effort.

Connell, a seasonal resident of Nantucket, is an attorney in New York City for corporate banking law. He explains that if everyone helped to make an effort in cleaning just a little bit every day, it would make a phenomenal difference in this community and beyond.

“We don't say, 'Oh, you can do it.' We don't want Nantucketers to think 'Oh, they'll do it.' The point is, everyone does his or her part. Then you wind up with not only an island that is known for it's beautiful architecture or it's great history, but an island that is known for being spotless.”

To encourage participation, the cleanup effort is strictly an hour long, beginning at 8 o'clock on the dot. “We're trying to encourage people to take a small, discreet amount of their time to help,” said Connell.

Nantucket's Clean Team

Check out Nantucket's own amazing group of people helping to making our island a more beautiful place. The Clean Team is a group of volunteers who go arround the island every Saturday picking up trash for one hour, not a minute more, rain or shine.
