Miss Fairchild Brings The Funk

Nantucket has beautiful beaches and a rich history, but you’d be mistaken if you said Nantucket didn’t have any Funk. With the release of their new mix-tape, Miss Fairchild, is putting the “K back in FUN.”Miss Fairchild is comprised mostly of local musicians, including Travis Richard (vocals), Todd Richard (drums), and Schuyler Wheldon (guitar and flute). Their free mix-tape includes classic DJ favorites and 4 original songs from their album due out in September, Ooh La La Sha La. The band is attempting to build an underground movement focusing on the internet, DJ play, and word of mouth. It’s easy to see how lead singer Travis Richard’s style has progressed when considering his main musical influences, James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone, and Prince. On his new album he says, “The live experience made us want to approach this record from an entertainment point of view. We saw what people wanted and wanted to give it to them full force. That’s why it’s so funky.”Asked about how Nantucket has influenced his music Travis Richard said, “I love Nantucket. That’s why I’m still here. Making music here is incredible because you have everything that you want to take from. You have a sense of time that maybe you don’t have when you’re in the midst of the hustle and bustle.”Miss Fairchild’s music is rump shaking Funk/Pop and they approach a live show as if they are throwing a party, anchored by DJ P Nice on the turntables. Miss Fairchild wants you to know, “whatever it is, you can get over it, and we can help you get there!”
