Kids Take Flight

Rob Sulzer

At Aviation Career Education Camp kids take to the sky and learn about the inner workings of the airport.

In the week-long camp, kids age 9 to 14 tour Nantucket Memorial Airport and fly on a variety of planes, from luxury jets like the Gulf Stream 4 to military aircraft like C-130s. Campers also get a chance to talk one-on-one with pilots about their experiences in the skies.

During their downtime on the ground, campers draw airplanes and play the computer program Flight Simulator. The program teaches campers flying skills, such as how to take off and navigate a plane without the real life risks. Flight Simulator is one of the most popular components of camp.

On Wednesday, campers went on their scheduled flight on the C-130 and learned a typical Nantucket lesson. Fog happens and you can't fly in it.

What was scheduled to be an hour long scenic ride turned into an hour and a half long flight to Hyannis. The Nantucket Memorial Airport temporarily closed due to the fog and campers were forced to take the boat back to the island.

Make sure to watch The MorningNoon&Night show tomorrow for a full video segment of the camp and their adventure.
