Jordan Ferreira sits on the bench with two of his coaches, his brother Mike Ferreira and father Tom Ferreira.
Last week Jordan Ferreira scored his one thousandth point, becoming the sixth player in Nantucket history to reach the milestone. Ferreira has built quite the sports resume over the past year, playing as the star receiver on the Nantucket Whalers Football team and catching the winning pass on a last second scoring drive in the Whaler’s homecoming game.
Talented athletes in small towns (and small islands) often attract a lot of media attention (Check out the Nantucket Independent's article on the Ferreira basketball family) and Ferreira has handled it in stride.
“I think it’s good. People in the community get really involved. They like to see kids in the newspaper,” he said.
Jordan’s brother and Whalers Basketball Assistant Coach Mike Ferreira (who scored 950 points in his Nantucket High School basketball career) talked about growing up and playing basketball with Jordan:
“I think growing up when he was younger, he probably looked up to me. We used to play a lot and we had a hoop out back of our house. As he got older we would work on different things, there wasn't much competition only because I am older then him, but now he could hold his own. He's a much better scorer than I was, he's a great player but he needs to work on becoming more of an all-around player.”
Congratulations to Jordan Ferreira and the Nantucket High School Basketball team. The Whaler's record is now 9-5 and the team is on fire riding a four game winning streak. Good luck to the team in the postseason.
