It's official. The Seagrille has the best chowder on the island, it says so on their trophy they won at Nantucket's Annual Chowder Festival.
Every year, fans of this delectable New England concoction head down to the parking lot at The Grand Union to try out samples of a number of local restaurants' chowder. 675 fans to be exact. Something Natural and Nantucket Bake Shop were on-hand with their fresh baked breads for the attendees as they lined up around the corner to get a taste of the local flavor. Nine restaurants signed up for this event sponsored by Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce.
Chowder (aka "chowda" if you're from New England) is a staple in any Nantucketer's diet. It's rich, decadent and yet hearty texture is a must-have in any sea-shanty town.
The Seagrille took home the top prize, followed by Brant Point Grille with second place, and Arno's at 41 Main Street at third. "Everybody has a different recipe, so there are certainly aspects that chefs get to display their talents at," said Chamber of Commerce President Chris Morris, "The secret to good chowder is in the roue."
