This years' 27th Iron Teams Relay finished with a hit at The Chicken Box after miles and miles of land covered on our small Island. Take a look at one participant's story in this piece.
Click here for race results.A Taste Of Nantucket Catering Company was the first men's team to complete the race with a time of 2:29:07. This is their third year in a row as the first through the finish line. Their team was compiled of Matt Haley, 22; Jan Queeb, 39; Kona Hosier, 40; Rich Brooks, 24; and David Bridgewater, 23, an eight-time All-American runner who said, "This is definitely a team effort, from first to last. I would love to come back and do it again next year.""Everyone enjoys what they're doing," stated Kona Hosier, who completed the 4th leg of the race, swimming half of a mile and running three-fourths of a mile. The first individual contestant to cross the finish line this year was Nick Wispelwey, a local resident of the Island. His time was 2:55:24. Tired, perspiring, and in dire need of a breather, he managed to talk to Plum for a little bit on how he felt about biking, running and swimming on Nantucket for over 32 miles."The paddling was the most difficult," he said, "This is my fourth year completing the race, and my third year doing it as an individual."Nantucket Spice, who drew their name from Brit-pop group The Spice Girls 10 years ago when they first started running in Iron Teams, was the first all-female team to cross the finish line. Jenny Paradis completed the swim; Cheryl Emery ran a 3.5 mile beach leg; Carol Muehling biked for 19 miles; Karen Alence paddled; Lisa Kolp finished the last run; and Lisa Smith was their starting runner."It's such a community event," said Paradis, whose daughter also participated on the Nantucket High School Team, "It's a kickoff to summer. It's nice to be competitive, the all-women's team category isn't a huge category."Congratulations to all of the participants of the race, and stay tuned to Plum for a video from the Iron Teams Relay 2007!
