"I have a dream that one day…the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood."
-Martin Luther King, jr., 1963
Forty years ago an historic figure's life was taken, and today, we honor his memory throughout the country on the third Monday of every January. Martin Luther King Day is an annual celebration and observation of a pivotal figure during the Civil Rights movement that began more than four decades ago.
The first official observation of MLK Day was in 1986, three years after President Ronald Reagan signed and approved the holiday.
