Al Crosby speaks about the history of Whale oil on Nantucket at the Brown Bag lecture series.
At the height of the whaling era towards the beginning of the 19th century, the boundless quest for black gold took Nantucketers around the world in search of whales and their precious blubber.
Perhaps this same spirit has transcended several generations and has found a new home in the Whaler pride of the Nantucket High School Football team.
“Living on an Island creates a sense that water tends to connect and not divide people and that’s a difference in history.” Said Bill Tramposch, Executive Director of the Nantucket Historical Association.
Check out the video below as Plum catches up with lecturer Al Crosby and Bill Tramposch to learn more about what made Nantucket the whaling capital of the world.

This is a beautiful and thoughtful commentary. It should be shown regularly on Plum to remind us all that there is a fragile balance between commercial development and historic preservation. Thank you NHA and Plum.
