For nearly 30 years, hip-hop has been a growing & integral part of our society. On Feb 26, The Nantucket Boys & Girls Club celebrated this very element as part of their Hip-Hop Diversity Program.
What exactly is hip hop? Traditionally, hip-hop is composed of four elements: breakdancing, rapping, DJ'ing, and street art. On an island as diverse as Nantucket, it was only natural that this program be incorporated into the Boys & Girls Club, according to Programs Director Cory Shepherd.
"We thought that one of the best ways we could promote diversity at the Club was by promoting hip hop," said Shepherd, "So many of the kids can relate to it; it’s common ground for most of them."
Despite this week being Winter Break for Nantucket's Public Schools, a number of families are still on the island, and a great deal of kids are spending some quality time at the club. Shepherd said that their diversity program is a part of more than Nantucket: "There’s a national Boys & Girls Club program to promote diversity; we thought that this one would be very good for the kids."
