The holiday season on Nantucket is a time to give thanks for good health, family, friends, and so much more. The wonderful thing about living here are the many opportunities to give back to our community.
Here at Plum, we want to bring you some of the very special ways, both big and small, you can help those less fortunate during this holiday season.
Small Ways to Help
Every little bit helps, and with the holiday season right around the corner, there are several ways to show that you care on Nantucket.
The Nantucket Food Pantry accepts donations year-round, and during the holiday season, what better way to help than to drop off canned and non-perishable goods at their main location in the basement of St. Paul's Parish at 20 Fair Street. For more info, call 508-228-7438.
You can also donate toys and other gifts for kids with the help of Inky Santa's Toy Drive. New toys are being accepted at the following locations: Stop & Shop and Grand Union supermarkets, Island Variety, the Atheneum, Faregrounds Restaurant, Madaket Marine and Pacific National Bank on Sparks Avenue and Nantucket Bank on Orange Street. Donations can be mailed to Inky Santa, c/o The Inquirer and Mirror, P.O. Box 1198, Nantucket, MA 02554, or dropped off at the newspaper at the Milestone Rotary, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 508-228-0001 for more information.
Another great thing you can do is gather your gently used goods, from clothing to decorations to housewares, to The Seconds Shop, open all winter long, located on Amelia Drive. Proceeds from the shop go towards helping Family & Children's Services on Nantucket.
Helping in Big Ways
If you've got a little more time on your hands, we've got a bunch of big ways you can help out on Nantucket.
Meals on Wheels is another great way to help your fellow community members. The program brings meals to senior citizens in the community thanks to the help of some amazing volunteers, which can include you. Volunteers need only give one hour a week to help drive meals to the island 'shome-bound elderly. You can also help wash dishes Monday through Friday at the senior dining center. Call 508-228-4647 for more information on how you can help.
Volunteering your time at Our Island Home (508-325-5630) or The Saltmarsh Center (508-228-4490) can make a big impact on a senior citizen's life. Just by donating an hour or two a week by helping out with the elderly, you can help make a difference in our community.
With the Nantucket Literacy Program you can volunteer your time to provide personal tutoring to help adults improve their reading, writing, or math skills. Call 508-228-7257, X 1817 to find out more.
