Dr. James Hayes-Bohanan’s mission for the perfect cup
of coffee has brought him around the world and to the shores of
Nantucket. On Saturday he shared his passion for geography and the bitter
beverage at the Nantucket Atheneum.
As attendees sipped on
meticulously brewed beans, Hayes-Bohanan talked about natural
resources, environmental problems, and global patterns of colonization
related to his favorite bean. In fact, Hayes-Bohanan teaches an entire
course on the Geography of Coffee at Bridgewater State College.
Hayes-Bohanan
said, “I got into geography as a way to address environmnental problems
facing the world as a whole. Coffee is something that people encounter
everyday without thinking much about. It’s a much more complex issue.”
The lecture is just one of a series of events the Nantucket Atheneum
hosts during the off-season. “Every month we try to host a film
screening, concert, and book talk. We like to put people on stage and
give them a spotlight,” said Amy Jenness, Co-Director of Adult Programs
at the Nantucket Atheneum.
