Nantucket's creative community opened its arms yet again to embrace the art of poetry and spoken work during National Poetry Month. The entire weekend of April 4 through April 6, Nantucket Spoken Word brought us a weekend of poems and the arts.
On Friday night the Artists Association of Nantucket's annual Teacher/Student Show opened at 6pm at the Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery (19 Washington Street). Nantucket students were encouraged to check out the artwork during the gallery's hours on Saturday (11-5). During this time, students chose a piece of artwork and write a poem about it, which was later presented and judged on Sunday at a special gallery event.
The juried competition selected three poems from the submissions. Prizes were donated by Nantucket Bookworks, Mitchell's Book Corner, and The Even Keel. "This is going to be a fun afternoon of poetry," said Len Germinara of Spoken Word Nantucket prior to the weekend's events, "The writing competition is open to all Nantucket students."
Not only was the event a celebration of the students writing and AAN artwork, but poet Jack McCarthy was a featured part of the reading. "Jack McCarthy is one of the most engaging performance poets in the country," said Germinara.
