As the sun set at Jetties Beach on Sunday, Plum and The Atlantic hosted a debate between distinguished author Christopher Hitchens and Associate Editor of The Atlantic, Ross Douthat. The debate was moderated by the Director of Public Programs at the New York Library Paul Holdengraber.
The event attracted over 300 people as Christopher Hitchens defended ideas from his new book, “God is Not Great.” The book is one of many on the Bookmark 2007 reading list, a summer reading list compiled by The Atlantic and Plum. The evening began with a discussion on the power of words with Pulitzer Prize winning author Debby Applegate, former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, musician Josh Ritter, and Atlantic literary editor Ben Schwarz. Music by Josh Ritter followed as everyone in attendance discussed the debate over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.
Bookmark on the Beach was the final event of Bookmark 2007 that included dinners and discussions throughout the summer. In the first year of their relationship, the Atlantic and Plum have forged a relationship that promotes creativity and the discussion of some incredible books.
