Andrea Marcavitch, Molly Anderson, Maggie Head & Wyatt Leske proudly stand in the Young Adults & Teens area, the newest addition to the Atheneum.
The Nantucket Atheneum introduced a new addition to their building last night, beginning with the musical delights of The Chuck Colley Trio. After more than a year of planning, grant requests, and so much more, the new Young Adult Area can now call the Atheneum home.
Wyatt Leske is a member of the Teen Advisory Board that helped to jump-start this magnificent addition to the community. "Right away I thought, 'Let's have a space for teens where they can all hang out'," said Leske of the request for him to get onboard to assist the project, "It took a lot of time and patience, and a little bit of money. It's a wonderful space and I'm very thankful for it."
Executive Director of the Atheneum Molly Anderson explained that, since becoming a part of the library three years ago, she said there was "this big hole that cried out to be filled" in regards to a teen and young adult section. "The children had The Weezie Library and the adults had the Atheneum," she explained, but there was not a whole lot of teen-friendly space. Now the newly renovated area on the top floor is comparable to a well-lit and organized university study hall, with big comfy armchairs and coffee tables on the way, plus a buzz in the air about upcoming events specifically for teens and young adults.
"It's very important for kids and teens to have spaces that are safe and healthy," she said about the new area, something that “makes a lot of sense.”
