Another chapter closed for Nantucket's annual One Book One Island event on Feb 10, bringing the local community closer to books and reading. This year's reading selections were Hemingway's classic tale The Old Man and The Sea, Rodman Philbrick's The Young Man and The Sea, and Island Boy, a children's book by Barbara Cooney.

On Jan 3, copies of these books were available to the public for no cost throughout the island. The mission of One Book One Island "seeks to promote reading, literacy, and community by encouraging the entire population of Nantucket to read, discuss, and reflect on the same book. In addition, the project is designed to foster the importance of life-long learning for children and adults and to provide multiple opportunities for cultural enrichment."

The multi-week event concluded with a gathering at The Nantucket Atheneum to hear Hemingway's novel The Old Man and The Sea in words and music by local artists, writers, poets, and musicians. 23 people read, sang, and strummed along to the words of Ernest Hemingway as photos trailed across a projector screen, bringing images to the words that were being spoken or sung.

Leonard Germinara has played a vital role in the One Book One Island event this year, particularly with the final event. "The One Book One Island goal has been to be a community endeavor," he said, "The finale brings
together people from across the spectrum of island life to celebrate a
joy and appreciation for our island home. It's been an event that's
spanned the better part of two weeks and it's been the impetus for
conversations in supermarket check out lines, churches, and for people
passing in the street."
