Nantucket is a town, a county, and an island. The year-round population is about 10,000 and the summer population booms to over 50,000 residents. Although the island is about 14 miles long and 3.5 miles wide (about the size of Manhattan), most of the Island's activity occurs in Nantucket's downtown. A wealth of information is available for you at Nantucket Visitors Services, located on Federal Street.
Hitting the Beach:
The North Shore has calmer waters and the South Shore is a little rougher.
Environmentally speaking, please don’t feed the seals. When it says don’t cross into the Piping Plover areas, please respect the nesting grounds. They’re an endangered species. And remember, please don’t walk on the beach grass, as it contributes to the process of erosion.
Driving on the Beach:
If you’re looking to drive on the beach with your 4-wheel drive vehicle, permit stickers are available behind the police station on South Water Street downtown for access to Great Point, 40th Pole, and other select beaches. We don’t want you to get fined by the ATV cops who patrol the beaches, so pick one up before you head out for some sun and surf.
Getting Around Nantucket:
For public transportation, the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority (NRTA), offers rides to virtually every part of the islands in the summer. Rental cars from Budget, National, and Nantucket Rent-a-Car can be found at Nantucket Memorial Airport. Nantucket Cottage Hospital is located mid-Island, right across the street from Nantucket High School off of Vesper Lane. Dan’s Pharmacy, a Good Neighbor Pharmacy, is the closest pharmacy to the hospital.
Lyme Disease:
Lastly, remember after walking through some of Nantucket’s amazing conservation lands to always check for ticks. Deer Ticks carrying Lyme Disease is a reality on our beautiful island, so always dress appropriately when hiking, biking or just walking around wooded and grassy areas.
