Large bass like this one caught aboard the Albacore are being caught of the east side of the island right now. See the Nantucket Fishing Report.

Submitted by Bob Decosta

Last week was a tough one for fishing according to Captain Bob Decosta of Albacore Charters. Wind out of the NE made boat and shore fishing near impossible. The only silver lining to the dark cloud was The Bonito bar between Smith Point and Tuckernuck. Some anglers were catching nice mixed bags of Bonito and False albacore. Great Point has been good from the beach. Try the west side of the point now that it is open. The weather is going to improve the first of the week so get out there and fish!

These two giant tuna weighing 400lbs and 500lbs were caught by Capt Bob DeCosta East of the island on September 17. See the Nantucket Fishing Report.

This week has been great for fishing according to Captain Bob Decosta of Albacore Charters. The fall temperatures with clear skies and northerly winds have really turned the fish on. Lots of big blues and stripers are being caught all around the island. Try the South shore and Great Point from the beach. The East side of the island from Sankaty to Wauwinet is the spot to be if you are in a boat. False Albacore are back around the island. The small tuna are great fun on light tackle. Try fishing at Great Point for these speedsters.

Speaking of Tuna the Giants are back!!!! There were several big fish caught east of the island this week. During the next month the fishing should only get better. There are two fishing tournaments going on right now, the Fall Classic and the Nantucket Tackle Striper Tournament. Stop by Nantucket Tackle or The Anglers Club to sign up. Good luck everyone.

Big Bluefin Tuna like this one caught aboard the "Albacore" fall victim to live bluefish fished from a Kite. See the Nantucket Fishing Report.

The fishing on Nantucket continues to get better with each passing day according to Captain Bob Decosta of Albacore Charters. There are still plenty of bluefish around the island ranging in size from 3 to 17lbs. The north winds of fall have brought the stripers back in good numbers. Try the South shore from the beach. Bob has caught several fish in the 40 inch range this week. Black sea bass and scup are still plentiful on the wrecks in the sound. Offshore fishing for tuna is red hot. The bigger Giants are starting to show up. Live bluefish fished from a kite can produce fish as large a 1000lbs.

It’s been a great week for fishing on Nantucket according to Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters. The bluefish are still everywhere around the island. Striped bass are starting to show in good numbers off Sankaty Head and in the eastern rips. The Bonito are thick on the west end of the island between Smiths Point and Tuckernuck. Black Sea bass are on all the wrecks in the sound. Offshore the bluefin tuna fishing is red hot to the east of the island. This last week was the Anglers Club Shark Tournament. The guys caught lots of Makos ranging in size from 150lbs to just under 300 lbs. The biggest fish of the tournament was a 414 Thresher shark. The day after the tournament Capt Doug Smith fishing aboard the Albacore caught a 363 Mako for his charter. If you want to see big fish, now is the time to get out there.

Nantucket Fishing Report: 8/22/08

We had our first NW front of the year come through this week. The cooling temperatures brought the stripers back into the coastal waters according to Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters. Plenty of bluefish are still all around the island. There is some good Black Sea Bass fishing on the wrecks and the cobble bottom east of the island. Bluefin tuna continue to be caught in big numbers east of the island. The bigger fish are starting to arrive. Bob has heard reports of several 500lb plus fish caught on live bluefish up off Provincetown. It’s just a matter of time before these fish will arrive of our shores. This weekend is the 7th Annual Nantucket Anglers Club - Nantucket Tackle Shark Tournament. Fishing days are Saturday and Sunday. The boats will be weighing in fish from 4 to 6 PM on both days at the Anglers Club scale located in the Nantucket Boat Basin. Stop by and check out the catch. That’s it for this week.
