Large bass like this one caught aboard the Albacore are being caught of the east side of the island right now. See the Nantucket Fishing Report.

Submitted by Bob Decosta

Last week was a tough one for fishing according to Captain Bob Decosta of Albacore Charters. Wind out of the NE made boat and shore fishing near impossible. The only silver lining to the dark cloud was The Bonito bar between Smith Point and Tuckernuck. Some anglers were catching nice mixed bags of Bonito and False albacore. Great Point has been good from the beach. Try the west side of the point now that it is open. The weather is going to improve the first of the week so get out there and fish!

These two giant tuna weighing 400lbs and 500lbs were caught by Capt Bob DeCosta East of the island on September 17. See the Nantucket Fishing Report.

This week has been great for fishing according to Captain Bob Decosta of Albacore Charters. The fall temperatures with clear skies and northerly winds have really turned the fish on. Lots of big blues and stripers are being caught all around the island. Try the South shore and Great Point from the beach. The East side of the island from Sankaty to Wauwinet is the spot to be if you are in a boat. False Albacore are back around the island. The small tuna are great fun on light tackle. Try fishing at Great Point for these speedsters.

Speaking of Tuna the Giants are back!!!! There were several big fish caught east of the island this week. During the next month the fishing should only get better. There are two fishing tournaments going on right now, the Fall Classic and the Nantucket Tackle Striper Tournament. Stop by Nantucket Tackle or The Anglers Club to sign up. Good luck everyone.

Big Bluefin Tuna like this one caught aboard the "Albacore" fall victim to live bluefish fished from a Kite. See the Nantucket Fishing Report.

The fishing on Nantucket continues to get better with each passing day according to Captain Bob Decosta of Albacore Charters. There are still plenty of bluefish around the island ranging in size from 3 to 17lbs. The north winds of fall have brought the stripers back in good numbers. Try the South shore from the beach. Bob has caught several fish in the 40 inch range this week. Black sea bass and scup are still plentiful on the wrecks in the sound. Offshore fishing for tuna is red hot. The bigger Giants are starting to show up. Live bluefish fished from a kite can produce fish as large a 1000lbs.

It’s been a great week for fishing on Nantucket according to Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters. The bluefish are still everywhere around the island. Striped bass are starting to show in good numbers off Sankaty Head and in the eastern rips. The Bonito are thick on the west end of the island between Smiths Point and Tuckernuck. Black Sea bass are on all the wrecks in the sound. Offshore the bluefin tuna fishing is red hot to the east of the island. This last week was the Anglers Club Shark Tournament. The guys caught lots of Makos ranging in size from 150lbs to just under 300 lbs. The biggest fish of the tournament was a 414 Thresher shark. The day after the tournament Capt Doug Smith fishing aboard the Albacore caught a 363 Mako for his charter. If you want to see big fish, now is the time to get out there.

Captain Nick Scanzillo caught this 40 in striper aboard the charter boat "Albacore" on light tackle this week. This fish was Nick’s personnel best and after taking the photo was released to fight another day.

Fishing Report 8-8

Fishing continues to be great all around the island according to Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters. The bluefish are everywhere. Try Great Point from the beach, but watch out for the seals. They will steal your fish. The striper fishing is improving every day, especially in the cold water to the east of the island.

Fluke and Sea Bass continue to be caught in the sound and off the East side of the island. Bonito are showing in good numbers on the bars between Tuckernut and Smiths Point. This has been one of the best years for sharks in quite a while, especially Makos. The tuna fishing turned back on this week. Several fish over 100 pounds were caught between the BC buoy and the Sword.

This nice striper was caught aboard the Albacore this week using light tackle top.

Fishing Report 7/4

Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters reports that fishing around the island is at its peak right know. Anglers are catching bluefish all around the island. Great Point continues to be one of the best spots. Both blues and stripers are being caught in big numbers on both tides. Speaking stripers, this is the time of year when top water action is at its best. Bottom fishing is a little slow right now. There are plenty of Scup in the harbor and a few black sea bass on the wrecks. The big disappointment is fluke. They have not showed in any great numbers yet. It will probably happen on this next moon.

If you are looking to take the kids out for some dock fishing there are plenty of squid in the marina. Beach fishing is a little harder right now due the nesting Plovers. All the beach closing makes it hard to get to the fish. Try along the outside of the Coatue. There have been a lot of big blues right on top of the beach.

Offshore the action continues to get better with each passing day. There are plenty of tuna east of the island ranging in size from 50 to 200 lbs. South of the island the shark fishing is red hot, lots of big blue sharks with a fair amount of Makos mixed in.

If you want to catch a big bass on light tackle give the Albacore a call 508-228-5074. Bob knows the spots to find them!

This nice bluefin was caught aboard the Albacore this week.

The bass and bluefishing continues to be fantastic all around the island according to Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters. There are lots of big striped bass off Sankaty Head. The biggest problem is getting through all the bluefish. We have not seen this many bluefish in over 20 years. Great Point has a nice mix of both bass and blues in the rip. Most of the bass are being caught on the east tide at the end of the rip. Plenty of scup and sea bass on the wrecks in the sound.

The offshore action is in full swing. South of the island there are plenty of sharks being caught, mostly Blue sharks with a few Makos and Threshers mixed in. There is a nice eddy of warm water in Altantis Canyon. Some friends of Bob’s caught two Yellowfin tuna, a White marlin, jumped off a Blue marlin and boated a swordfish there last week. East of the island the Bluefin tuna action is red hot! Most of the fish are in the 50 to 60 inch range but a few giants have been caught.

Big Bass on Nantucket

Greg Ferri lays in a pile of fish caught on Saturday, June 7 aboard the Albacore. The fish in Greg's lap is a nice 42 inch Striper caught just minutes earlier. Click on the Sports section of the site for the Nantucket Fishing Report.

What a week! The weather was beautiful and so was the fishing. Big bluefish from 4 to 15lbs are all around the island according to Captain Bob DeCosta of Albacore Charters. The mouth of the Jetties is a good place to start. The striper fishing continues to get better with each passing day. Bob and his clients caught limits of big stripers on every trip this week. The biggest fish was about 25lbs. The harbor is full of bass ranging in size from 5 to 25lbs. One fish caught at Brant Point this week weighed 35lbs.

Scup and Sea Bass continue to bite on the wrecks in the sound. There are Sea bass off the east side of the island as well. The Fluke season opened on June 10th so there should be more to report on that next week.

Bob took a trip to the East this weekend to look for Tuna. There was plenty of bait, a few whales, but no tuna. He did see a lot of seals offshore. It’s June and the big shark rumors are flowing around the island. Several charter captains on the Vineyard have sited a Great White estimated to be about 15 feet long. She is probably feeding on the seals in the area.

The first annual East — West tournament is being held June 21st-22nd. This tournament is a competition between the Nantucket Anglers Club and the Madaket Admiralty Club. Two person teams will represent each club (only one member of the team needs to be a club member). The winning team will ensure bragging rights and the trophy for the next year. If you are a member of either club and would like to fish, stop by the club and sign up. That’s it for this week.
