2008 Annual Nantucket Town Meeting

At the 2008 Annual Nantucket Town Meeting, 601 people were in attendance on the first night and 358 voters were present the 2nd night at at Nantucket High School's Mary P. Walker Auditorium. Take a look at what got passed, what didn't, and what was up for discussion over the course of two nights at this year's important meeting.

The Nantucket Civic League is hosting a forum today to meet the candidates running for Selectmen, Town Planning Board, Nantucket School Committee and the Historic District Commission. Representatives from Nantucket's media outlets will hold a Q & A session with the candidates and as we distinguish Nantucket's most pressing issues, we're asking you (yes, you!) for help.

At the Nantucket Civic League's community forum, we learned some of the hot issues for the 2008 Town Meeting: new zoning regulations, coastal erosion regulations, and Historic District Commission regulations. From cost of living, to funding for our public schools, our island faces critical issues that will affect its long-term sustainability.

The second of four public regional hearings on the environmental impact of the wind turbines proposed in Nantucket Sound was held Tuesday evening at the Nantucket High School. The packed Mary P. Walker auditorium was the stage for debate on an issue that, according to CapeCodToday.com, has split Nantucket. Sixty people got up to speak, 36 of which were against the wind farm. The meeting, which went from 5-9pm, began with a presentation from Mineral Management Services, a Federal Agency, and then followed with people from Nantucket talking about their position on the issue.
