Georgia Snell goes by many names: Reverend Snell, Georgia Ann, or just simply Georgia. She also wears many hats helping out in the community on Nantucket, a town she has been a part of and made an impression on for 17 years.
Snell was no stranger to the Island when she decided to permanently reside here all those years ago. Her father had grown up on Nantucket, a place she loves, she said, for the history, the environment, and the people. "I think that number one for me is the natural world which stimulates my sense of spirituality and the presence of God," said Snell.
She has been a part of numerous Island groups and non-profit organizations, including A Safe Place, The Nantucket Historical Association, one of the original founders of Nantucket's Habitat For Humanity, Alcohol-and-Substance-Abuse-Prevention (ASAP), and Nantucket Human Services Center, just to name a few.
A former Board of Selectmen and FinCom member, Snell explained that being a part of the town government is very different than being a part of the local business on the Island. "It was very illuminating and sometimes frustrating, and I really enjoyed learning about all of it," she said.
Currently, Snell is the minister "first and always" at Stillwaters Community Worship, which meets every Sunday at Our Island Home or 9 East Creek Road.
One of her pet projects right now is directing the Nantucket Rental Assistant Program, providing rental assistance to people who may have been laid off, are going through a divorce, or have experienced an illness detracting them from being able to pay monthly rent. "You feel so good when you help somebody have a place to live," said Snell proudly.
"I can't imagine living anywhere else anymore," said Snell, "I've considered leaving, but then I think, 'Why?' I've been to many very beautiful places but this has always been my home."
