Figawi Race 2007

The 36-year-long tradition of racing your boat to Nantucket Island from Hyannis continued this year for the annual Figawi Boat Race. Over 3000 sailors and guests registered for the event on more than 200 boats, which included 30 power boats. The one-day race leads into a three-day excursion for the visitors and locals on the Island. Check out the video below as the boats come into Nantucket Harbor during this year's race.

The winners from each division are as follows:
Division 1: Mya, Skipper Edward Kennedy
Division 2: Nepenthe, Skipper Robert Read
Division 3: Straight Jacket, Skipper Sanford Tyler
Division 4: Shindig, Skipper Kevin Flannery
Division 5: Summers Off 2, Skipper Paul Tetreault
Division 6: Helios, Skipper Charles Prefontaine

Not only is it a race, but the entire Figawi Race included the famed Figawi Charity Ball, which raised money for local charities. Figawi Charities, Inc. reels in over $200,000 each year, and over $2.2 million in total, in support of over 25 local charities. This year the Presenting Sponsor is Vineyard Vines.

Race registration began on Friday morning at The Hyannis Yacht Club. Saturday morning, at 10:00 a.m. sharp, hundreds of boats started towards the small island nearly 30 miles out to sea. The race was followed by a tent party at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Figawi High School Invitational was held Sunday at the Boat Basin and included a clambake, awards ceremony, and a VIP Sponsor Thank You Reception.

See The Stars

As Dr. Vladimir Strelnitski brings the ring around Saturn into perfect focus, he discusses the research projects he and his interns will cover this summer. As director of astronomy at the Maria Mitchell Association, Dr. Strelnitski has some pretty cosmic goals.

With the help of the observatories new 1,500 lbs research telescope, Dr. Strelinski plans on “monitoring the variability of galactic nuclei (quasars), observing transits of extra solar planets, and monitoring a unique ‘star-laser’ (MWC349).

In fact, one of the six interns, Naama Dror, will play a critical role in monitoring the “star-laser.” Entering her sophomore year at the University of California at Berkeley, she’s creating a computer program that models the radio observations of this star. Another student will measure the “supersonic turbulence in interstellar space.” How about that for a college student’s summer on Nantucket?

The open night program at the Loines Observatory will be held regularly Fridays at 9 pm. Starting June 13th, the open nights will be held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the remainder of the summer season. Cost is $5 per adult and $3 per child for Maria Mitchell Association members and $10 per adults and $6 per child for non-members.

So stop by, discuss the stars, and see one of the island’s hidden treasures.

A Day To Remember

The American Civil War began 146 years ago; World War II started 68 years ago; Vietnam, 42; The Korean War, 57; and the war in Iraq still rages today after nearly 5 years.

This past Memorial Day was not just a random day off from work, it was a day to remember all of our brave men and women who have proudly served our great country. Nantucket's way of commemorating our soldiers was an exceptional tradition that many members of the community are regulary involved in.

A parade began downtown at 1 in the afternoon at the American Legion Hall. Men and women, their families and children, gathered for the traditional march throughout town that eventually led up to the Prospect Hill Cemetary.

Selectman and former Nantucket Police officer Brian Chadwick was part of the event. "We're reflecting on our history of our country," he said, "It was very special to me to think about our present military members and how much they mean to us."

Korean War veteran Robert Mooney was also part of the monumental parade. "It means something to those of us that served in uniform, but this whole town has something to remember here. The soldiers' graves behind me [at Prospect Hill Cemetary] go back to the Civil War," he said.

The parade and ceremony on Nantucket is a chance for current and past members of our military to proudly remember the many causes our country has had to fight for.

"It's a great Natucket tradition," stated Mooney, "I hope it continues for years to come."

Plum and John Kerry

Plum was on the scene with Senator John Kerry this Monday morning at the picturesque Straight Wharf Docks.

Plum's David Kuhn had a chance to talk with the Massachusetts Senator and former Presidential candidate for a few minutes on many issues surrounding our Island, our state, and our country.

"Any place can become Coney Island. Not every place can be Nantucket, and I think we've got to hold on to what we have," Kerry said on what makes the Island so special.

Kerry and Kuhn also discussed the climate in Washington, D.C., the war in Iraq, costs of living in Massachusetts, and his new book he wrote with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry.

This Moment on Earth
is a book that touches on the environment and global issues. "We tackled this because we really care passionately about the quality of our surroundings," said Kerry on his book, "We wrote this book because we wanted people to see caring about the environment has nothing to do with being a Republican or a Democrat."

A final question Kuhn had for Kerry surrounded the 2008 Presidential Election, and whether or not Kerry would consider running again. "We'll see where we are," said Kerry.

Be sure to watch Plum's video with Senator John Kerry, and stay tuned to Plum on TV, only on Channel 22.

It Floats!

Nantucket High School students got their feet wet on the hottest day of the year so far, launching their 16-foot creation: a Banks Dory wooden rowboat.

The boat launched from the Town Pier, located across from the town parking lot on Washington Street. Plum was on the scene to catch this awesome event: the "splashing" of the 16-foot Banks Dory rowboat.

The boat was built over the course of 2 school-years, headed up by sophomore Annie Sager and 2006-NHS grad Claire Minihan. Nearly a dozen Nantucket High School students were on the scene at the town pier to help launch the boat into low tide.

Be sure to check out Pre-Launch coverage and photo gallery of this fantastic effort, and stay tuned to Plum's Morning, Noon & Night show, this weekend at 8 am, 3 pm, and 8 pm, only on Channel 22.
